The Lisbon Royal Academy of Sciences decreed that proposed for the year 1784 for its Memorias de Agricultura the topic of viticulture and the development of the commercial aspects of wine production should be the subject but, since that year no study was considered to meet the established standard, the subject was selected again for 1787 and the prize money doubled (see preface).   The quantity of wine produced in the Douro regions in 1787 had been below expectations, both British and independent Portuguese buyers offered prices substantially over the legal limit, and fierce complaints and the threat of disorder caused the Portuguese government to halt market negotiations.   The furious growers, left unpaid, tore down notices and shot one official.   To prevent future disturbances the government decided to increase supplies by enlarging the region from which wines might be exported (see Norman R. Bennett, “The golden age of the port wine system, 1781-1807,” in The International History Review, XII, 2, May 1990, pp. 232-33).    The Academia Real had been founded in 1779 by the erudite Duque de Lafões who endeavoured to promote the ideas of the Enlightenment in Portugal, including more efficient agricultural methods.   Copy from the library of the Dukes of Palmella.
