Description

Small 4to.  xxii pp., (1) f., 272 pp., (1) f.  With vignette drawn by the translator & engraved by D.J. Silva on title p.  Recent half morocco.

The author of this rare work was one of the most celebrated artists of early 19th century Portugal, and considered by José Augusto França (‘A arte em Portugal,’ v. I, p. 116) to be among the most innovative of his day.   Having studied painting in Rome, in 1803 he became court painter.   The ‘Memoria dos mais famosos Pintores Portuguezes, e dos melhores Quadros seus,’ occupying pp. 141 - 258, is highly important for the details it gives of Portuguese artists, the first attempt at information of this kind.
