Solano dominated Portuguese music theory in his century, and in addition to his work as a theorist he was a gifted teacher. From 1779 he directed his own music school. The Novo tratado contains much useful information on 18th-century theory and performing practice, and was greatly indebted to Gasparini's L'armonico pratico al cimbalo (see Grove’s Dictionary of Music & Musicians). Vieira considered the work to be well written and still to be of value to music scholars.
