The Portuguese Cortes had been revived during D. João VI’s absence in Brazil. Reproducing passages from documents in the Portuguese Royal Archives (Torre do Tombo) the author traces the history of the Cortes from their mediaeval beginnings to the end of the 17th century, when the income from the discovery of gold and precious stones in Brazil ended the necessity to convoke Cortes. Lacks Part II.
