Porreños’s biography of Philip II is important in that it was written a few years after the king’s death, the first edition having appeared in 1628.   In his Laurel de Apolo, Lope de Vega praised the author as

“Gloria de Cuenca, Baltasar  Porreno

En el verso Latino y Castellano,

De tanta erudición se muestra lleno.”   The second work, written by Emanuel Sueyro, first appeared in Antwerp in 1622.   With the library stamp of the Duke of Palmela on the title page and the book plate of John Bury.
