After the annexation of Portugal Philip, with his habitual prudence, actively sought the acceptance of his Portuguese subjects;  he spent several months there and granted a number of privileges, including the complete separation of Portuguese administration and rights of representation at Madrid.   To resist Philip's intentions to unite the two countries would have necessitated arming and defending Portugal, and neither the ruler, Cardinal Henrique, nor the rich merchants were willing to make such a sacrifice.   Furthermore, the nobility were attracted by the thought of receiving favours from this most powerful of monarchs.   The licence, signed by Fr. Manoel Coelho, state that the sermons were preached in several Portuguese towns, including the Mosteiro de Belém in Lisbon and the cathedral at Coimbra.   Innocêncio (II, 374) praised Francisco Fernandes Galvão as being one of the best theologians and preachers of his day.
