Description

Small 8vo.  VII (1 blank), 381 pp.  With engraved portrait by Joaquim José Ramalho of the Prophet Mohammed writing in a book.  Contemporary calf, spine gilt (back cover & foot of spine worn).    Tiny burn hole in p. 25/6.   

First edition.   The author writes at length of the Muslim religion and gives a vivid, first-hand description of many aspects of life among the Turks, in Constantinople and other parts of Turkey.   He lived in Turkey for some years and, according to the preface, travelled extensively in the country.   The second edition, of 1808, does not include the portrait.
