Scarce edition of the work by Nieremberg, who was regarded as the last of the great Spanish mystics. Of German parents, he was born and died in Madrid. E. Allison Peers considered the work, which first appeared in 1649, to be “one of the great religious books of its century” (Studies of the Spanish mystics, II, p. 225). “Menéndez y Pelayo described Nieremberg’s style as ‘spontaneous, lively, erudite, and elegant.’ (He) was so highly regarded in his lifetime that it became the custom in many Spanish churches to read extracts from his works to the congregation on Sundays” (Ward, Oxford Companion to Spanish Literature, p. 413).
