The Namarrais were a warlike tribe living in thick forest in the north of the country, and although an army of 455 men and 53 horses, led by the Governor, Joaquim Augusto Mousinho do Albuquerque, sent to pacify them, it met with fierce resistance, and it was not until the Republic had been declared in Portugal in 1910 that they were finally truly subjugated.   Joaquim Augusto Mousinho do Albuquerque had replaced Antonio Enes as governor general of Mozambique.
