Description

Small 8vo.  (8) ff., 237 (3 blank) pp.  With 30 folding plates engraved by Queiroz.  Recent quarter calf.   Copy with pp. cockled, 10 plates taken from another copy

The work concentrates mainly on military architecture and fortifications, largely inspired by Vauban, whose influence continued well into the 18th century, and it includes a chapter on civil architecture, describing in particular the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns of contemporary fashion.   The fine 30 plates depict detailed geometrical designs, civil constructions and military fortifications, etc., and are by Gregorio Francisco de Queiroz, one of the most celebrated Portuguese engravers.   The author was a captain in the Engineering Corps and taught drawing at the Royal Academy of Fortification in Lisbon.   With the book plate of John Bury.
