MADRE de DEOS, Gaspar

Memorias para a história da Capitania de S. Vicente,  hoje chamada de S. Paulo, do Estado do Brazil publicadas de ordem da Academia R. das Sciencias . .

Lisbon, Na Typografia da Academia (das Sciencias), 1797.

Small 4to.  (4) ff., 242 pp. (1) f. with list of works printed by the Academia Real das Sciências.   Recent calf, spine gilt.      Slit repaired in inner margins of pp. 235-end, otherwise a fine copy.

First edition.  Drawing on diligent research in civil and religious archives, the author traces meticulously the history of the province from its first settlement by the Portuguese up to the 18th century.   He states that he wrote the work after a careful study of available documents, correcting inaccurate information about the Paulistas given in the Géographie historique by Joseph Vaissette (Paris 1755) and by Charlevoix in his Histoire du Paraguay (Paris l756).   Gaspar Madre de Deos, whose secular name was Gaspar Teixeira de Azevedo, was a native of Santos, Brazil, and was a corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, abbot of the monastery of São Bento in Rio de Janeiro and Provincial in Bahia of his order.
