Derechos y deberes del ciudadano. Obra traducida del idioma francés al castellano.
Cadiz, Imprenta Tormentaria, 1812.
Small 8vo. CXV, (1), 318 pp. Contemporary calf. Old bookseller’s label inside front cover.
Rare first edition of the translation into Spanish of Abbé de Mably’s Des droits et des devoirs du citoyen, which first appeared in French in 1789. The works of the French philosophers were forbidden in late 18th century Spain and read in the original only by an educated minority. But following the Napoleonic invasion Spanish more liberal ideas prevailed and translations began to be printed. According to Palau the work was translated by the Duchess of Astorga. Palau 145551, “obra prohibida.”
