Memoria sobre Lourenço Marques (Delagoa Bay).
Lisbon, Imprensa Nacional, 1870.
8vo. LXXXIX, (1), 149 pp. With 2 folding maps showing part of Mozambique and Lourenço Marques Bay. Later quarter calf (original printed wrappers preserved). Pencilled annotations on pp. 90-95 & 12, some spotting on maps.
The author gives a detailed description of Mozambique, its history, climate, agriculture and administration and is critical of colonial policy, urging economic reform. He was appointed as the lawyer defending Portuguese rights in Mozambique against claims by the English, a case which went to arbitration when the French president MacMahon in 1875 decided in favour of the Portuguese claim. A short vocabulary of the Sena language appears on pp. 73 -79.
