Though apparently a barrister by profession, Edmond Hoyle (1671/2 - 1769) also gave lessons on playing whist, and his manuscript handbook on the subject developed into this famous and popular work.   He was the first to write scientifically on the game, his Short Treatise on the Game of Whist first appearing in 1742.   He possessed a vigorous and original writing style, but was a careless editor.   After his death his name became synonymous with any book on card games (see New D.N.B., v. 28).   The work was translated by Luiz de Vasconcelles Botelho, and this “second” edition is in fact the third.

Innocêncio V, 334 cites 1768 edition only.   Gonçalves Rodrigues, A tradução em Portugal, 3484.   (Cf. Azevedo-Samodães 3448 for 1768 ed.)   OCLC lists 1 copy only of this edition.
