"Possibly the first separate publication of these letters. The original French text may have first appeared in a serial publication" (Harvard catalogue). In these letters dated 5 to 27 July 1848 the hapless Chinese mandarin of the title had arrived in the Paris siege of 1848 and sought to recount and explain events to his fellow-countryman, Liu Kiu. He describes the new phenomenon of locomotives, and compares “communism” with the Jesuit communities. The author was a lawyer, journalist and politician of the extreme left.
