In this little-known text book the author stresses the importance of steam-powered machines. He was professor of physics at the University of Coimbra, and a member of the Lisbon Royal Academy of Sciences. He contributed scientific articles to learned journals, including the Instituto de Coimbra, and was respected for his learning and dedication.
