“There is no doubt that Tomás Antônio Gonzaga is one of the fine love poets of the world . . if one had no other reason for learning Portuguese, the desire to read his poems would be sufficient motive" (Putnam, Marvelous journey, a survey of four centuries of Brazilian literature, p. 89). Borba de Moraes states that “this edition reproduces page by page that of 1811,” which he regards, from the point of view of the accuracy of the text, as being the "fundamental" edition of the poet's work, and which served as a model for subsequent ones. He confirms what the writer of the "Advertencia" informs the reader, that "by means of exhaustive labours and long periods of time we undertook the task of searching out the most authentic and reliable Copies, some even in the Writer's own hand; and after an extensive examination we assembled them . . replacing many other lyrics, multiplicity of lines, and even an infinity of misplaced words . . from other Editions." Part I occupies pp. (5)-122, and Part II pp. (123)-222; the final 4 pp. contain the list of the poems and variations. This copy does not include the Rollandiana edition of 1820 of the ‘Terceira Parte’ which is sometimes bound with it.
