Description

Small 4to.  I: xi, (1), 328 pp.;  II: 438 pp., (1) f. with errata, 1 folding plate.  Near contemporary calf (binding of Vol. I rubbed, Vol. II rebacked).   Ownership stamp on title p. of Vol. I, some pencil scribbles in Vol. II.

A rare copy of a handbook for popular use, written in a simple style, giving guidance on agricultural pursuits, covering such matters as the breeding and care of cattle, instructions for making butter, and veterinary remedies.   Instructions follow for the care of sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, dogs and cats.   The second volume is devoted to horses, their care, choice of breeds, points to note when buying them, and to donkeys and mules, which he prefers to oxen as draught animals.  The work ends with an explanation of pharmaceutical terms and a dictionary of plants and drugs with instructions for preparing medical remedies.    He stresses the importance of good hygiene, laments the lack of education among the labouring classes, and recounts with horror how a certain lady, who prided herself on her refinements, constructed a hen coup using her late husband’s books.   He gives a delightful account of the behaviour of his pet cat.   The plate shows a horse with an injured leg suspended in a cradle.
