First edition.   In 1820 the Inquisition was finally suppressed in Portugal.   Pp. 264-294 contain details of five trials before the Inquisition in Spain, said to have been taken from the original documents; Sacramento Blake states that the first edition sold out rapidly, the second being printed in 1822.     The Historia was placed on the Index of forbidden books in Rome on 26 March 1825.   The author was born in province of Bahia, and returned there in 1823 to engage in political activities, because of which, Innocêncio believed, he was forced to flee to the U.S.A, from where he later returned.   Though it is not acknowledged, the work is a translation of Histoire des inquisitions religieuses d’Italie, d’Espagne, et du Portugal by the prolific French author, Joseph Lavallée (Paris 1809).

Innocêncio III, 192 & X, 24 (& cf. III, pp. 225-226).   Azevedo-Samodães 2841, “A primeira edição foi proibida de circular, sendo por isso os seus exemplares bastante raros.”  Monteverde 2833.   (Cf. Sacramento Blake III, 282 (1822 edition).)   Not in Borba de Moraes or Rodrigues.
