Description

4to.  (7) ff., (1) blank f., (26) ff., 439 pp.   Ink corrections on pp. 76 & 100.   Slight traces of worming in lower margin of pp. 213-224.

The very rare first edition of a very popular and frequently reprinted work.   The writer, who championed the cause of the purity of style in Portuguese, laments the lack of enthusiasm of the Portuguese youth for study, and stresses the importance of a well-written letter.   António Isidoro da Fonseca, the printer, later established the first, short-lived printing press in Brazil, subsequently closed by government order in 1747, with all its materials apprehended.

Innocêncio II, 406.   Pinto de Mattos 281.   WorldCat. lists 1 copy only.
