With Pombal’s encouragement several new ceramic factories were established in Portugal in the second half of the 18th century, and were protected by royal charter.   To stimulate domestic production in 1770 he forbade the import of foreign ceramics, but the ban on English creamware was lifted by this decree to supply existing demand, on payment of the duties specified in the decree.
