Small 8vo.   Primeira & Segunda Partes by Bernardo de Brito:  -  I: (2) ff., LVI pp., (22) ff., 453 pp.;  II: (5) ff., 476 pp.;  III: (l) f., 468 pp., (4) ff.;  IV: (5) ff., 412 pp., (2) ff., 31 pp.;  V: (1) f., 630 pp., (4) ff.;  VI: (1) f., 592 pp., (4) ff.;  Terceira & Quarta Partes by António BRANDÃO -  I: (15) ff., 507 pp., (7) ff.;  II: (l) f., 662 pp., (6) ff.   Quarter vellum, morocco labels on spines (some spines slightly worn).   Some underlining, but otherwise a clean, sound set.

"(Bernardo de Brito) . . at once became known as one of the best writers of his time, and he is still reckoned among the masters of Portuguese prose . .   Parts 3 and 4, by Frei Antonio Brandão . . appeared in l632 . . Brandão had spent nearly ten years collecting and sifting documentary evidence for his work and is a far better historian than Brito, although in style he is not his equal," (Bell, Portuguese Literature, p. 207).   The original edition appeared in 1597-1650 and is very rare.    This edition does not include Parts 5 – 7 by Francisco de Brandão and Rafael de Jesus.   Volumes numbered l - 6i & ii, 8, lacking Vol. 7 as usual.
