Barbary pirates continued to terrorize Mediterranean ports in the mid-18th century, and in less than a year the merchants of Marseilles had suffered the loss of five ships and several fishing boats. To combat the menace the city hired and fitted out four ships from the Neapolitan Court, together with five warships and two frigates. A xebec with heavily armed Moors and an Algerian merchant ship were soon captured and summary justice meted out.
