This rare work, dedicated to the Prince Regent and future D. João VI and the printing financed by the Conde de Galveas (see Vol. II, p. v), covers not only the treatment of swellings and tumours but that for a wide variety of infections and ailments. One of Portugal’s most famous early 19th century physicians, António de Almeida was sent by Manuel Constâncio, surgeon to the Portuguese Royal Household, to further his medical studies in London. His other notable treatise was his Tratado completo de medicina operatoria (4 vols. 1800).
